In short
- This is the campaign website of Ivan Otto, candidate for Whistler Council. The campaign is responsible for the personal information it collects, under British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
- We collect only what you choose to give us — a message, an e-mail address for updates, or a donation — and use it only for the purpose you gave it for.
- We do not sell, trade or share your information with other candidates, parties, advertisers or data brokers, and we do not profile voters, buy lists or scrape social media.
- Donations are regulated by the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act (LECFA). By law, the campaign must record your name and residential address, report every contribution to Elections BC, and Elections BC publishes the names of people who give $100 or more.
- Questions, access requests or complaints: Ivan Otto, financial agent — info@ivanotto.ca.
Who is responsible
The organization accountable for this policy is the election campaign of Ivan Otto, candidate for Whistler Council in the October 17, 2026 general local election. The person responsible for privacy is the candidate, who is also the campaign's financial agent:
Ivan Otto, financial agent · info@ivanotto.ca
PIPA sets out rules for how organizations in British Columbia collect, use and disclose personal information — any information about an identifiable individual, such as a name, home address, e-mail address, or the fact that you donated to or contacted a campaign. We are committed to following PIPA and this policy, and to answering your questions about either.
What we collect, and why
We collect the minimum needed for each purpose. Nothing on this site collects personal information in the background: reading pages, watching the cookie banner or clicking a link sends nothing about you to us.
| When you… | We collect | We use it to |
|---|---|---|
| Send a message through the contact form | Name, e-mail address, subject, message | Reply to you. Nothing else — unless you also tick the updates box. |
| Tick "send me campaign updates" or sign up in the footer | E-mail address (and name, if you gave it) | Send occasional campaign news until election day. You can unsubscribe at any time by writing to info@ivanotto.ca. |
| Make a donation | First and last name, e-mail address, residential address, amount, date, your eligibility declaration. Donations are by Interac e-Transfer; if card payments are added later, card details would be entered on Stripe's page and handled by Stripe, not by this website | Accept the contribution, verify you are eligible, and keep the records and reports LECFA requires — see "Donations" below. |
| Offer to volunteer or ask for a sign | Name, contact details, what you offered | Get in touch about that offer. |
| Talk to us at the door, at an event or on social media | Only what you tell us directly | Follow up on what you asked. We do not record anything about other members of your household or anything we merely observe. |
| Visit the site | Nothing from us. The hosting provider keeps standard web server logs (IP address, time, page requested), as every web host does | We do not use them to identify visitors. |
Cookies are covered separately in the Cookie Policy. Anonymous visit statistics, if we ever switch them on, stay off until you opt in through the cookie settings.
Consent
- We ask for your consent before or when we collect your information, by telling you — on the form, on this page — what we will use it for. Consent may be given electronically, in writing or in person.
- Campaign updates always need your express consent. The updates box is never pre-ticked. Giving us your e-mail to answer a question does not sign you up for updates.
- We use information only for the purpose you gave it for. A new purpose means we ask again.
- You can withdraw consent at any time by e-mailing info@ivanotto.ca. We will stop, except where the law requires us to keep a record — for example LECFA requires the campaign to keep donation records even if you later ask us to delete them.
- This site is not directed at children. Voters are 18 or older; we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Donations
Campaign contributions are governed by the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act and administered by Elections BC. Because of that law, donations work differently from the rest of this site:
- Who may give. Only individuals who are residents of British Columbia and Canadian citizens or permanent residents, using their own money. Organizations, businesses and unions cannot contribute, and nobody may give on someone else's behalf or be reimbursed for a contribution. The 2026 limit is $1,429.70 per person, per campaign.
- What we must record. For every contribution, the financial agent must record the amount, the date, and your full name and residential address. Contributors are required by law to provide this. Anonymous contributions are not accepted online.
- What is reported and published. All contributions are reported to Elections BC in the campaign's disclosure statement. If you give $100 or more, Elections BC publishes your name and the amount in its public Financial Reports and Political Contributions System. This is required by law and we cannot opt you out of it.
- e-Transfer contributions. If you give by Interac e-Transfer, you first fill in the contributor form on the Donate page. The form stores your name, e-mail, residential address, the amount and method you chose, and your eligibility declaration in a file on the campaign's web server, and e-mails a copy to the financial agent, who matches it against the campaign bank account. Your bank sends the campaign only the sender name shown on your account; the form is how the campaign gets the rest of the information the law requires.
- Payment details. Contributions are currently made by Interac e-Transfer only. If card donations are turned on later, they will be processed by Stripe (Stripe Payments Canada, Ltd.): you would enter your card details on Stripe's secure payment page; they never pass through or are stored on this website. Stripe collects the details needed to process the payment and prevent fraud (card, name, e-mail, billing address, IP address) under its own privacy policy, and may store and process that information outside Canada, including in the United States. The campaign sees the name, e-mail, address, amount, date and your eligibility declaration — the information LECFA requires — not your card number.
- No tax receipts. Contributions to local election campaigns are not eligible for tax receipts.
- Prohibited contributions — for example from someone who turns out not to be eligible, or over the limit — must by law be returned within 30 days, so we may contact you to confirm your eligibility or arrange a refund.
- Retention. LECFA requires the financial agent to keep the campaign's financial records, including contributor information, for five years after the disclosure statement is filed (or after any amended statement). We keep them no longer than that.
How we use and share information
We use personal information only for the purposes above. We disclose it only:
- to Elections BC, as LECFA requires for contributions and campaign financing;
- to the service providers that make the site and its forms work: the web hosting provider Web Hosting Canada (privacy policy), which also hosts the campaign e-mail account; and, only if and when card contributions are turned on, Stripe for card payments (privacy policy). They process it under their own terms and privacy policies, linked here. The campaign updates list is not sent through any third-party mailing service; if one is used later, it will be named here first;
- when the law requires it, for example under a court order.
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information; share it with any other candidate, party, elector organization or campaign; give it to data brokers or advertising networks; upload it to social media platforms to build advertising audiences; or use it to score or profile voters. We do not use automated calling, chatbots or AI systems to contact you.
Where information is kept and how it is protected
- The website is hosted by Web Hosting Canada, on servers in Canada. Messages sent through the contact and sign-up forms arrive in the campaign's e-mail account (info@ivanotto.ca) and are not stored on the website itself.
- Contributions are made by Interac e-Transfer. When you fill in the contributor form, the record is stored on the website so the financial agent can match your contribution to the campaign bank account, and it is kept in the campaign's financial records. If card contributions are turned on later, Stripe also holds those card payment records.
- Access is limited to the candidate and the financial agent.
- We protect personal information with security arrangements reasonable for a small campaign: the site runs entirely over HTTPS, the website's administration is password-protected, account passwords are not shared, and campaign data is not kept on shared or unlocked devices.
- The website's forms are protected against automated spam by the site itself, without any third-party service, and the site loads nothing from third parties.
- If we discover a privacy breach that could cause you harm, we will tell you and, where required, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
How long we keep it
- Messages and volunteer offers: until the matter is closed, and no later than one year after election day.
- Campaign updates list: until you unsubscribe, and in any case deleted within 90 days after the campaign files its disclosure statement — unless you have told us you want to hear about future campaigns.
- Donation records: five years after the disclosure statement is filed, as LECFA requires.
- Server logs: for the period set by our hosting provider.
After that, information is securely deleted or anonymized.
Your rights
You can, at any time, ask us in writing (info@ivanotto.ca):
- what personal information we hold about you, how we have used it and who we have disclosed it to — we answer within 30 business days, and may ask you to confirm your identity first, and there is no fee;
- to correct anything that is wrong or incomplete — if we agree, we fix it and tell anyone we disclosed it to in the past year; if we don't, we note your request on the record;
- to withdraw consent or unsubscribe — see "Consent" above for the one legal exception (donation records).

This policy may change if the campaign adds a service, such as the e-mail tool for updates. The date at the top tells you when it last changed; if a change affects how we use information you have already given us, we will tell you before it takes effect.
